Skyler Mixed Breed Young - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Meridian, Idaho

When we first met Skyler, he had been bounced from home to shelter to home a few too many times, had an injury on his paw, was experiencing repeated bouts of diarrhea, and was very stressed. Skyler had been through a lot in his young life. And he wasnt even 2 years old yet.

Weve had Skyler for a while now, and weve been working hard to help him. Hes one of those dogs that exemplifies the heartache of the rescue and shelter world. You know the story: moved from place to place, surrendered when families no longer had time for him, kept outside constantly, put in situations that overwhelmed him, and finally overcome by stress. He once did well with dogs, cats, and kids. He once met strangers with a friendly wiggle and a polite doggie hello. He was once a happy-go-lucky pup, living with his family. Until they tired of him, and everything changed.

Skyler learned to keep his guard up -- and for good reason. He wasnt sure who to trust, he didnt know what was his and who was in charge of the food, and he couldnt figure out whether dogs were friends or foes. Skyler grew up in and out of so many different environments that he didnt know what to do with himself. How could he? Everything always changed.

But through it all, Skyler remained smart, responsive, and eager to learn and please. Since hes been with us, Skyler has settled into consistency and routine. Hes learned to respond to many more cues (this boy is brilliant, serious genius-level doggo), and hes learning to trust. Like so many dogs in kennel situations, Skyler has resource guarding and stranger danger issues. Hes also sensitive to touch with people he doesnt know.

We need to help Skyler feel protected and cared for and loved. Were looking for a very, very experienced handler to take Skyler home, continue his training, and modify some of his less desirable behaviors. At MCR, Skyler is a staff-only dog because of his history and behaviors. He absolutely adores the people he knows: this boy is as affectionate and loving as they come, he solicits touch at every opportunity, he cuddles, he plays, he listens, he learns, and he gives the best kisses with big puppy dog eyes to boot. But he needs an adult adopter who will earn that spot in Skylers trusted inner circle and who will help Skyler to become more confident and calm. His adopter will need to respect Skylers boundaries, food/toys, and space until Skyler is ready to take the relationship to the next level. Here, we all earned his trust by playing the invisible dog game, rewarding him for good behaviors, and letting him tell us when hes had enough.

For now, we recommend a home without kids or other animals. We are looking for someone whos done some behavioral modification in the past, whos familiar with positive reinforcement training, and whos willing to work with a trainer. Skyler is worth every moment spent helping him to be the best dog he can be -- but it will be work, and we want to set both Skyler and his person up for a lifetime of success. We know that its a tall order, asking for an adopter who can work with a dog like Skyler, but we all have this boys back. And we want nothing but the best for him.
